About this show
Must be 21 or older to attend - No refunds Rivers Casino Portsmouth is bringing the sounds of Motown to Hampton Roads with two of the most legendary vocal groups in music history. For one unforgettable night, The Temptations and The Four Tops will share the stage at The Event Center on Friday, Sept. 12, at 8pm. Tickets start at $59 and are available now at RiversCasino.com/Portsmouth. The pairing of these two Motown powerhouses dates back to the network TV special “Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever,” where their back-to-back “battle of the bands” performance became one of the night’s most celebrated moments — launching a touring tradition that continues to this day. Often referred to as American music royalty, The Temptations rank No. 1 on Billboard magazine’s most recent list of the “Greatest R&B/Hip-Hop Artists of All Time” and were named among Rolling Stone’s “100 Greatest Artists of All Time.” Led by founding member Dr. Otis Williams, the group’s concerts feature fan favorites including “My Girl,” “Just My Imagination (Running Away with Me),” “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg” and “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone.” Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989, The Temptations have earned five Grammy Awards — including the Recording Academy’s Lifetime Achievement Award — and more than 50 Gold, Platinum, and Multi-Platinum records. Their story inspired the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical “Ain’t Too Proud: The Life and Times of The Temptations” and the Emmy Award-winning television miniseries “The Temptations.” Another legendary Motown act born in Detroit, The Four Tops are celebrating an incredible 70 years of timeless hits. Throughout their remarkable career, the group earned 24 Top 40 hits in the U.S., including the No. 1 smashes “I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch)” and “Reach Out I’ll Be There.” Their extensive catalog also features favorites such as “Baby I Need Your Loving,” “Standing in the Shadows of Love,” “Bernadette,” and “When She Was My Girl.” Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990 and honored with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008, the group’s legacy is carried on today by four extraordinary singers with direct lineage to the original members: Lawrence Payton Jr., Theo Peoples, Ronnie McNeir, and Michael Brock.
